Chapter 10.

In this chapter, Mark Watney arrives back at the HAB celebrates the fact that he is back, and gets Pathfinder set up. He tries powering it up, but it doesn’t work. He tries troubleshooting it, and it wakes up and starts working. It has a bunch of non-operational things, but at least it is working now.

Chapter 11.

In this chapter, Mark Watney talks to NASA, and they communicate back to him. They talk back and forth and make sure the connection works. Annie, a NASA press executive in Houston, asks Venkat for a picture, but due to Watney having to wear a space suit when he leaves the HAB, they can’t get a shot of his face because if Watney takes his helmet off, he will suffocate and die, much to Annie’s annoyance. The press wants a picture of his face, but they can’t get one. Annie complains, but there’s nothing Venkat can do. Watney waits for another message, and then does a bunch of transcribing.

Chapter 12.

This chapter describes what happened when Mark Watney got left behind on Mars. It describes the storm, and the crew’s efforts to get out of Mars before the storm toppled the MAV (Mars Ascent Vehicle. Basically their ride back to Earth.) It describes what the Crew was thinking when Watney was struck by the antenna, and their feelings of leaving Watney behind.
