Chapter 1.
In this chapter, Mark Watney explains what happened and how he got left behind on Planet Mars after a freak accident. His crew saw the antenna hit him and him fly away, so they assumed he was dead. They took off in their ship before the windstorm toppled it down and they were all stuck on Mars. Watney also explains how he survived the antenna piercing his suit and his side and how his body saved him by clotting up the hole in his spacesuit with his own blood. Watney is alive because of blood.
Chapter 2.
In this chapter, Mark Watney tells how he is going to survive until the next mission comes and rescues him by growing potatoes inside the HAB. He gets dirt from the Mars surface and mixes it with Earth dirt, and he takes human waste and mixes it into the dirt to give it the essential bacteria it needs for plants to grow in it. Watney is a botanist, so he knows how to make plants grow, but making them grow in the HAB on Mars is a totally different challenge than making plants grow on Earth for Watney.
Chapter 3.
In this chapter, Mark Watney decides how to make water for the soil to use for the potatoes he is planning on growing later on. He gets more dirt in the HAB for the plants, and trims them. He decides that the best way to get water for his plants is to get it from hydrazine, or rocket fuel, by extracting hydrogen from it and turning it into H2O, or as we know it, water!
